Meaning & origin

(measured from records)

Main GB Location (1881): E Anglia: esp. Essex. apparently a variant of Spurden . Compare Robert Spurgin, 1602, Joseph Spurdens, 1634 in IGI (Stepney, Middx); John Spurgeon, 1681, Richd. Spurden, 1711 in IGI (Great Oakley, Essex); Fra. John Spurgeon, 1719, Eliz: Spurdens, 1748, Elizabeth Spurden, 1761, John Spurgens, 1838 in IGI (Dickleburgh, Norfolk). However, the change in the medial consonant is difficult to explain without an intermediary *Spurdion (or something similar), which is not on record and would be an irregular development of Spurden. The name may have been influenced by confusion with Pridgeon and Spridgeon but the evidence for this is slight. Further information: The story that the Spurgeon family of Essex were 16th-century immigrants from the Netherlands (related in Titford) does not seem to be supported by any evidence.

About this data

measured from records inferred from the name graph machine-generated

These figures come from the data snapshot of and will change as it is rebuilt.

Statistics are aggregated from the Mondonomo name corpus; related names and etymology are inferred from the name graph; pronunciation and any machine-marked transliterations are model-generated. Read how the numbers are made, including their known failure modes, and where the data comes from.

Reference works we consult — surname dictionaries, official name registers, Wikidata and Wiktionary — are named directly, beside the claims they support. The per-country source counts also include datasets of person records: we publish how many there are and their authority tier, but not their names.
