Main GB Location (1881): WR Yorks; Cumb. relationship name apparently from an anglicized form of the Welsh or Brittonic personal name Rhydderch (see Prothero ). Redmonds, Dictionary of Yorks Surnames notes that the WR Yorks family were retainers of Richard Redman at Harewood Castle and may therefore have moved into Yorks from Cumb where the Redmans originated (see Redmayne ). The appearance of a Welsh derived surname in 16th-century Cumb is surprising, and Morgan and Morgan suggest instead that the Cumb surname may have been indigenous to NW England. This supposes that the same personal name was current in post-Conquest Cumb, a remnant of the Brittonic language that was spoken there until about the 11th century, but no evidence has yet been found to confirm the hypothesis.
