Meaning & origin(measured from records)
Main GB Location (1881): Shrops. occupational name from Middle English sifocere, sivekere, seuker ‘sieve maker’ or ‘one who sieves (flour)’, a derivative either of Middle English *sifoc ‘sieve’ + -ere or of Middle English siven ‘to pass Shukla through a sieve’ + the rare suffix -kere. Roger Sewker, 1409 in Nottingham Borough Court Rolls, possessed a pair of wooden sieves. The sequence /seu:/ developed to /sju:/, /su:/, /ʃu:/, and /ʃju:/ in early Modern English, so Sewker may also appear as Suker, Sh(o)uker, and Shewker. With voicing of the intervocalic /k/ as /g/, as in the 1275 Worcs example and the 1308 Staffs example, the name would also sometimes develop to Sugar . Further information: Spellings with -n- in Assize Rolls, Hundred Rolls, Patent Rolls, Poll Tax, and Subsidy Rolls have been silently altered to -u-, i.e. /v/. Compare the early bearers cited under Singer (3) for further possible examples of Siveger mistranscribed as Sineger.

About this data
measured from records inferred from the name graph machine-generated
These figures come from the data snapshot of and will change as it is rebuilt.
Statistics are aggregated from the Mondonomo name corpus; related names and etymology are inferred from the name graph; pronunciation and any machine-marked transliterations are model-generated. Read how the numbers are made, including their known failure modes, and where the data comes from.
Reference works we consult — surname dictionaries, official name registers, Wikidata and Wiktionary — are named directly, beside the claims they support. The per-country source counts also include datasets of person records: we publish how many there are and their authority tier, but not their names.
