Meaning & origin(measured from records)

Típusa: Helynévi eredetű, magyar családnév. Eredete: Alapszava az ősi ugor eredetű eper szavunk. Ennek eredeti alakja *epere lehetett, amiből kétnyíltszótagos tendencia szerint a második nyílt szótag magánhangzója kiesett, s így jött létre az epere ~ eperje szóalak. Ez a közbülső forma is, meg a későbbi eper ~ epre alak is megkapta a ’valamivel ellátott’, ’valamiben bővelkedő’ jelentésű -s képzőt, s így vált Eperjes ~ Epres helységnévvé Arad, Gömör, Kolozs, Nógrád, Sáros, Szabolcs, Veszprém, Zaránd vármegyében. Bármelyikhez hozzákapcsolódhatott az ’onnan/oda való’ jelentésű -i képző, s így eredetre, származási helyre utaló családnév lett belőle. Elterjedtsége: Az északi, északkeleti nyelvterületen, Heves, Borsod, Abaúj megyében való gyakoribb előfordulása arra utal, hogy a Gömör vármegyei Eperjes városból (ma Prešov) való származás volt névadási motivációja a legtöbb ide tartozó családnévnek.

About this data

measured from records inferred from the name graph machine-generated

These figures come from the data snapshot of and will change as it is rebuilt.

Statistics are aggregated from the Mondonomo name corpus; related names and etymology are inferred from the name graph; pronunciation and any machine-marked transliterations are model-generated. Read how the numbers are made, including their known failure modes, and where the data comes from.

Reference works we consult — surname dictionaries, official name registers, Wikidata and Wiktionary — are named directly, beside the claims they support. The per-country source counts also include datasets of person records: we publish how many there are and their authority tier, but not their names.
