Meaning & origin(measured from records)
from OF floe tuft (L floccus). This may be a nickname for someone with a distinctive tuft or quiff of hair, but in view of the fact that it is invariably found with a fused preposition-cum-article du, it is more probable that it is a topo¬ graphic name for someone who lived by a tuft or tump of raised ground. Vars. : Dufio(s), Duflot. Welsh Tudor; see Theodore. The earliest known bearer of the name is Maud Duder, widow of John, recorded in Somerset in 1545. The surname has always been largely confined to the W Country, particularly Devon. Most pres¬ ent-day English bearers of the name seem to descend from Samuel Duder (b. 1775) of Kingskerswell, Devon. The name was taken to Newfoundland by his brother Thomas (b. 1787), to New Zealand by his nephew Thomas (b. 1806), and to Brazil by a grandson (c .1865).

About this data
measured from records inferred from the name graph machine-generated
These figures come from the data snapshot of and will change as it is rebuilt.
Statistics are aggregated from the Mondonomo name corpus; related names and etymology are inferred from the name graph; pronunciation and any machine-marked transliterations are model-generated. Read how the numbers are made, including their known failure modes, and where the data comes from.
Reference works we consult — surname dictionaries, official name registers, Wikidata and Wiktionary — are named directly, beside the claims they support. The per-country source counts also include datasets of person records: we publish how many there are and their authority tier, but not their names.
