Main GB Location (1881): Hants. locative name from Penton Grafton or Penton Mewsey (both Hants), which are recorded as Peninton Abbatis and Penintona Roberti respectively in 1167. The place-names derive from Old English pening ‘penny’ + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’. Further information: It is noted in Ekwall, DEPN that Penton Grafton belonged to the Abbey of Grestayn in Normandy, and Penton Mewsey was held by Robert de Meisy in 1212.
