Meaning & origin(measured from records)

behaved in a masterful manner, or occupational name for someone who was master of his craft, from ME maister (OF maistre, L magister). In early instances this surname was often borne by people who were franklins or other sub¬ stantial freeholders, presumably because they had labourers under them to work their lands, and unlike smaller free tenants did not just till their property them¬ selves. In Scotland the eldest sons of barons had this title, and the name may also have been acquired as an occupa¬ tional nickname by a servant who worked in the household of the eldest son of a baron. Var.: Meystre. Cogns.: Fr.: Maistre, Maitre; Lemaistre, Lemaitre; Maitrier. Prov.: Mestre, Mistre; Mestrier. It.: Maestri, Maestro; Maistri, Maistro (Venetia); Ma(i)sto (Naples), Magistri, Magistro (Lombardy); Mastro, Marro (S Italy); Mascio (Apulia, Salento); Lo Mast(r)o (Sicily). Sp.: Maestre, Maeso. Cat.: Maestre, Mestre(s). Port.: Mestre. Ger.: Meister. Low Ger.: Me(e)ster. Flem., Du.: (De) Meester.

Grouping is the name graph's, not a register's: two spellings join a group when the evidence links them, so a group is a claim about the records rather than about the people.

About this data

measured from records inferred from the name graph machine-generated

These figures come from the data snapshot of and will change as it is rebuilt.

Statistics are aggregated from the Mondonomo name corpus; related names and etymology are inferred from the name graph; pronunciation and any machine-marked transliterations are model-generated. Read how the numbers are made, including their known failure modes, and where the data comes from.

Reference works we consult — surname dictionaries, official name registers, Wikidata and Wiktionary — are named directly, beside the claims they support. The per-country source counts also include datasets of person records: we publish how many there are and their authority tier, but not their names.
