Meaning & origin(measured from records)

Main GB Location (1881): scattered: esp. Berks;. (i) nickname or occupational name, possibly from Middle English get(t)our, jet(t)er ‘thrower’ (Old French geteor, jeteor) in some application: perhaps, like Thrower , for someone who made silk thread from raw silk; compare this name for other possible meanings. Alternatively, ‘dicethrower, gambler’ is possible, as is also, but much less likely, ‘sorcerer, caster of spells (jeteur de sorts)’. The French surname Jetteur exists, but is not dealt with in standard handbooks. (ii) nickname from Middle English gettour ‘vain person, swaggerer’, agent noun from the verb getten, jetten ‘to behave or dress fashionably or ostentatiously; to strut, swagger’; of French origin, though the sense is not found in Anglo-Norman. Further information: Family history suggests the first Scottish Frederick’s father came from Talaton (Devon) (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/ users/h/a/m/Marilyn-A-Hamilton/WEBSITE-0001/ UHP-0107.html), but this is unverified. It is uncertain whether this family pronounced an initial ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ g (/g/ or /ʤ/) and some researchers have associated this name with Gater .

About this data

measured from records inferred from the name graph machine-generated

These figures come from the data snapshot of and will change as it is rebuilt.

Statistics are aggregated from the Mondonomo name corpus; related names and etymology are inferred from the name graph; pronunciation and any machine-marked transliterations are model-generated. Read how the numbers are made, including their known failure modes, and where the data comes from.

Reference works we consult — surname dictionaries, official name registers, Wikidata and Wiktionary — are named directly, beside the claims they support. The per-country source counts also include datasets of person records: we publish how many there are and their authority tier, but not their names.
